On a Mac, to build Tangled's VM with Nix, you first have to set up a Linux builder for Nix. With the help of @winter, I was able to do so in the way described here.
It would be helpful to develop easier ways to do it, but this is the easiest one I know at the moment.

while i don't have a darwin machine to verify the steps, the addition is quite nice!
i will go ahead and merge this for now, i think the mac-specific instructions in the middle of the setup section breaks the flow a bit, i might hide that under a details tag.
