This was the "PR description" I put in the "new PR" form for this entire stack of 3 commits, but it seems to have been lost somehow.

Thanks to @winter for suggesting some of these on Discord.

Also adds a file to .gitignore to smooth out the experience a bit.

I'm hoping to later document some additional Mac-specific issues I encountered in that thread, but here are some quick fixups for now.

This PR is merged, not abandoned. I did remove it from the branch, though, so it's now marked as "deleted". (I think this is a mistake, the "merged" state would ideally be remembered)
